Farrah Soraya is accessible only via 4×4 vehicle, as you need to travel a bit up into the jungles of Pahang, western Malaysia. Arriving at the Tanah Aina Farrah Soraya car park, you start up the mountain through the rainforest to the reception area at 1700m above sea level, nested in a cool river valley where you are greeted by our friendly staff with a smile, a cool drink and chilled towel to refresh yourself from your journey. You have arrived at the rainforest! Time to start creating lifelong memories, for photos in front of the natural wooden sign welcoming you to Tanah Aina Farrah Soraya, before being checked in to your nearby accommodations and given an orientation to the surrounding resort and your schedule of activities. At a glance, this place looks like Mother Nature’s playground: a natural wonderland waiting to be explored!

Being at Tanah Aina Farrah Soraya is like a dream! The climate— perfect, no biting insects, in a beautiful forested valley, comfortable, stylish

accommodations, delicious food, more activities than you can imagine, or, if you prefer, no activities at all! The colors you experience are brilliant: The blue and silver of the water flowing over river rocks in golden sunlight, an artist’s palette of flower colors, a hundred shades of green, and the beautiful browns of the forest and buildings blending with oneanother.

At Tanah Aina Farrah Soraya we host guests in groups of all sizes, from couples and families to small and large parties from diverse organizations, businesses, or festive celebrations like weddings. The one thing that our guests soon have in common after arriving is that individuals quickly become connected to nature, to themselves, and then reconnected with one another, often in ways that are not always possible or easy back at home or work.

The lodgings are attractive and appealing to the eye, dispersed under the forest canopy and along the river. They are very thoughtfully and tastefully designed and constructed from locally sourced woods with rich natural earth tones. Buildings are constructed carefully around trees and boulders, without cutting down trees or major earth moving, resulting in minimal ecological impact, and blend seamlessly into the rainforest or river habitats.

Accommodations at Tanah Aina Farrah Soraya span quite a range, and are perfect for your company or group of any size, families, or a romantic getaway. There are over 20 different chalets, large bungalows built with natural full-grained local woods with lots of views of the river and forest, and roofs thatched with leaves from native forest trees, and deluxe dorm rooms to choose from. For example, one floor plan has a delux dorm with beautiful bathrooms on the ground floor and a big loft on the upper floor with a large bed up a flight of stairs, so that adults can haveprivacy, and when they like, keep an eye on the children. The interiors of each accommodation type, including the dorms (which are not at all like any college dorm room), are thoughtfully and tastefully appointed with attractive, comfortable furnishings and fixtures, and are well designed and decorated. All of your needs are thought of and met. You do not find any single-use plastic at the resort. Drinking water is provided in refillable, clean stoppered glass bottles. Every small detail is thought of. The minimization of environmental and carbon footprints is something that is well thought out, planned, designed and executed at all Tanah AinaResorts.

As you settle in to your place you start to hear the natural musical sounds of the river, birds singing, and insects chirping, but amazingly, there are no mosquitoes or other biting bugs, since the rainforest around the resort has plants that naturally repel biting insects!

Settling down in your room is a wonderful experience. The beds are very comfortable, the perfect firmness. Without lifting your head you can look outside at the river or trees, hear the water flow over the rocks, the breeze blowing gently through the trees, the birds singing. The temperature is cooler and may drop at night to about 25 degrees celsius; perfect sleep weather! You are really sleeping in the rainforest but with all of the comforts of home, and more!

Walking into the bathroom is an unexpected surprise. These are designed beautifully, the walls are fine stone or tile work, the showers are like standing in the rain or under a waterfall. You are supplied with pure, organic and biodegradable soap, shampoo and hair conditioner in bulk dispensers, made exclusively for Tanah Aina Resorts. These are createdto have no negative impact on the environment, so please leave yours at home. They are of such high quality that you may wish to purchase some to use at home, taking a bit of the Tanah Aina rainforest withyou.

Walking down the steps from your lodgings to the river, stepping over the stones into the water you feel no shock whatsoever — the temperature is comfortable, just perfect. A nice deep pool with rock and sand bottom is nearby. Swim or wade a bit upriver to some rocks, have a seat, lean back, and the water coming down on your back is a natural jacuzzi. Moving back across the clear, clean, calm pool you can literally swim with the fishes.

This may become one of your favorite experiences at Tanah Aina Farrah Soraya. What a wonderful way to end any day!

Down by the river in the airy open-sided dining area the Farrah Soraya staff serves up a delicious variety of fresh-made foods buffet style throughout the day: breakfast, lunch, dinner, and teas — a wide variety and generous servings of Malaysian and Western specialties for every palate, including vegetarian, chicken, and fish offerings, some not so spicy and some spicy ones, such as the different sambals. These are yummy as condiments and on the crisp fish crackers made fresh daily. — One dish is moredelicious

than the next. All served along with bottomless hot and cold beverages, available around the clock. Save room, you’ll want to taste a little of everything! Much of the produce, including Durian, and the fresh fish, is grown organically at several Tanah Aina estates. Enjoy your meals at leisure while sitting in the rainforest-cloaked valley by the side of the river with the sound of the water trickling by. What a wonderful way to dine!

There are several outdoor activities to take part in. For the River Trekking and Leap of Faith Activities there is a short presentation at 2:30 p.m. with a safety briefing and informative orientation in which you join with couples, families, organizations or business groups. You are shown how to properly wear a life jacket, to wear river shoes (many of which are provided), and to follow the instructions of the guides. These activities are quite fun and you are shown how to do them safely. Then, putting on a life jacket you cross the river on the footbridge and walk upstream. People are talking and laughing as you go along, the river bubbling musically down the valley. It’s cool, comfortable, and almost the entire walk is in the shade of the tree canopy. You can’t help feeling relaxed, calm, and stress free. Any thoughts you may have brought with you from the city drift away as you hike up the safe, secure riverside trail, using ropes and railings if needed. Reaching a large natural pool below a waterfall, you get to metal stairs leading up to a platform above the pool. Some people approaching the “Leap Of Faith” are initially not sure if they really want to do it. It is a leap of faith, after all, and that’s the point. You have to trust in yourself (before you can trust others).

Some people may hesitate, step back and forward, take a few extra

breaths, and that’s OK. Just about everybody who wants to takes the leap. The attendant on the platform gives you brief easy instructions, checks your life vest, and when ready you just step off, leap into the air feet first and enter the pool with a big splash. It’s thrilling! Many scream in exhilaration in midair while folks on the ground cheer, laugh, clap and shout words of encouragement! When you step off of the platform you suddenly experience a sense of freedom and exhilaration. All you might think about is “I’m doing something unlike anything I’ve done before!” Youfeel accomplished, blissful, like you’re free from all of the weight and any worry you’ve been carrying around from your regular daily life. The water is a very nice temperature so there is little or no shock as you enter. Right after you emerge you float on the surface and a guide gives you an air tube to hold on to as he pulls you to shore, so everything feels secure and safe. You’ve

made your leap of faith! You did something you may have thought you couldn’t do!Congratulations!

After the Leap of Faith you slowly walk or float safely downstream in the calm, shallow water back toward the resort. Everyone wears some type of river shoes and a life vest. A few people like to have a hand in some places, so friends or guides reach out to assist. The air temperature is perfect, neither too hot or cold, and no biting insects. Everyone looks happy, jovial, chatting, joking around, laughing, and light hearted. Walking, hearing the sounds of the water rippling over the rocks, the wind blowing through the trees, the birdsongs, frogs and insects chirping, people laughing and talking with one another in cheerful voices. Even if you don’t understand the languages that folks speak, you can tell that they’re happy, joyful, and really enjoying themselves. The water is very cool and refreshing, not cold at all, not too warm, and the cool breeze all make for a comfortable interlude. You hear the the babbling of the water splashing over the rocks, dripping from the mosses and ferns on the riverbank. The birds are singing. All together, a beautiful rainforest soundscape, like music written in and by nature.

As you get closer to the resort, just above the bridge there’s a clear pool filled with many large fish. A family stops, the father holds the baby girl, moving her through the water like she’s swimming while the 9 year old daughter gets on her father’s back and trails along behind, moving along the sandy bottom of this beautiful warm, clear pool with big fish swimming all around, while the mother, older daughter and toddler son sit on the side, talk, splash, and feed the fish — such an idyllic scene! — All having such a good time. One of the girls says “I’ve never been any place or done anything like this before! This isn’t like where we live in the city. I love it here! Earlier at breakfast we already said ‘we want to come back again, soon!’”

Back at the resort, in the open air dining room you sit down for afternoon tea which may include fritters, and noodles — both with mixed vegetables, coconut pancakes, another coconut delight, and a variety of beverages, hot and cold. — Just enough to satisfy your appetite after an afternoon of leaping and river walking.

After some free time and before the evening presentation is a varied dinner buffet. Western foods like barbecued fish, chicken, lamb, squid, chicken sausages, and coleslaw, salad, French fries, and onion rings may be served picnic style, as well as spaghetti di olio, garlic bread, and Asian dishes including fried rice, followed by cake baked fresh daily, fresh fruits, and your choice of beverages.

Before the Night Walk activity at Tanah Aina Farrah Soraya there is an interesting, informative, and inspirational evening program. First, a DVD is played by a photo-/video-grapher who films you and other participants in the Leap of Faith and River Trekking activities. The DVD is a nice compilation of these activities, a “living souvenir” of your days’ experience at Tanah Aina Farrah Soraya. Watching the DVD was a really enjoyable experience. Watching everyone as they were leaping and trekking in the river and then watching them in the audience, their facial expressions, the smiles, the laughter, the recognition: “Oh, that was so much fun!” Not only is the DVD a record of the day but it is really something that provides a cherished memory for a lifetime.

After the DVD showing comes the “Safe the Rainforest” presentation. This enlightens guests about what rainforests are, their vital ecosystem functions, goods and services, and human values, and why they are important to each and every one of us —to all life. The presentation is informative and evokes a lot of thoughts and strong emotions. It forces everyone to recognize the huge amount of destruction of rainforests in Malaysia and elsewhere, and, as importantly, the fact that each of us has, and can take on, responsibility to do something to reverse this trend of destruction, conserve remaining natural rainforests, and restore damaged rainforests. Essentially, when we save the rainforests we save ourselves.

Tanah Aina is a business, yes — in, and dependent on, the rainforest — but the founder and owner of Tanah Aina Resorts is also a prominent environmental activist and a conservationist, who, with PEKA (Pertubuhan Pelindung Khazanah Alam), the Malaysian environmental conservation NGO that she founded, is very actively involved in saving the rainforest and related natural resources on the ground in Malaysia. She is a woman who talks the talk, and walks the walk, with power in every step. Saving the rainforest, the pure air and water, and the other essential natural resources

rainforests generate is a key, essential priority, and should be a source of pride not only for all Malaysians, but for people everywhere. So, no matter where you come from, you may surprise yourself learning rainforests are something worth knowing about, because rainforests provide your essential needs, and you are likely to find them very interesting and beneficial, whatever your background.

Later in the evening there is a wonderful Night Walk activity. This is a new and unique experience for many people because most people are not used to walking around at night or in a rainforest! The path up the Save Our Rainforest Trail (SORT) is clear and easy,it rises on a gradual slope along switchbacks up the mountain, so it’s not too much of a challenge. At the top is a large tiled platform that retains the warmth from the day’s sun. You lay down on this smooth, clean surface and the warmth on your back feels great. Looking up you see the stars in the sky. Many people exclaim: “Ooh!, Aah!, Oh my!, I never see the stars at home in the city.” This is a very relaxing, calm experience shared with those around you. What a wonderful way to experience deep nature in the rainforest! After laying on the platform for awhile you make your way back down the mountain the way you came. The guides have lights where people need them, but it is actually quite easy to see in the star- and moon-light. After walking back to the resort some people engaged in family or group activities, hung out on decks in comfortable furniture, or went to their lodgings. The sound of the river flowing by,the warm, flower-scented breeze blowing through the trees, insects chirping, and occasional monkeys calling is very peaceful and calming — the rainforest’s music makes it easy to fall asleep soundly after an enjoyable, active day, because…

After a restful nights’ sleep at Tanah Aina Farrah Soraya you wake early for the Sunrise Walk. You follow the same path up the SORT as on the Night Walk and reach the top just as first light dawns over the distant mountain ridges. People are initially a little quiet, a bit subdued but slowly wake up as the suns’ glow starts to bathe the surrounding hillsides and rainforest. Folks wake a bit more, couples, families, company or organizationalgroups.

Many are sitting on the tile platform, still warm from yesterday’s sun. The sun slowly rises over the furthest mountain ridge, you start to see the closer ridges, the sun glows a beautiful shade of orange and as it climbs further becomes a fluorescent orange ball circled by a bright yellowsunburst,

perhaps one of the most beautiful sunrises you will have ever seen. Even if it’s a misty morning, wait a bit, because a spectacular sunrise is likely to surprise you! People “ooh” and “aah” and take photos. Some may start down the hill when others say “wait” because the sunrise starts to shine even more brilliantly! Everyone appears to be in a peaceful state of mind, talking quietly, some girls may strike poses like models, others take selfies of themselves and their groups, and then, you can take your time walking down the hill to the resort in time for a sumptuous buffet breakfast.

Next on the schedule at Tanah Aina Farrah Soraya is one of the most popular activities: The Flying Fox. There are flying foxes elsewhere but not like this! Staff put the safety gear on you and you walk a short way up the Save Our Rainforest Trail (SORT). You start on the side of the mountain, the safety equipment is state of the art, the staff are well trained, looking out for your safety, wellbeing and enjoyment. Once you’re clipped into the cables and you let go just about everyone lets out with a scream, until your lungs are empty. You fly across the valley, over the river, and there on the other side, staff are there to slow and catch you to make an easy stop.

The checkout experience can be a little bittersweet. Over the course of a couple of days you’re bound to meet some very nice people. When you say goodbye to each other it can be a tiny bit sad because even though you may not get to know each other well, you have a very good time together, and may even bond with others in your party or other groups. It’s not uncommon to take or share photos with others on social media.

As you are leaving Tanah Aina Farrah Soraya you may hear people say goodbye, hug one another or exchange contact information. Youthen board a 4 wheel drive vehicle to take you back down the mountain. As people head down you may hear expressions like: “This is such a special experience”, “What a wonderful place”, “What a great opportunity to connect with nature and others”. Some people are a bit wistful, saying things like “I’m leaving this great place but I want to come back and I will as soon as Ican”.
